ZiLOG -Press Release
• ZiLOG Takes Aggressive Stand in Meeting Customer Requirements for Lead Free Products
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 2003--
Environmentally-Conscious Microcontrollers Comply with European Community Waste Regulations
ZiLOG, Inc. (OTCBB:ZILG), the creator of the Z80 microprocessor and a leading innovator of integrated 8-bit microcontroller solutions, announced today that lead-free versions of its microcontrollers are now available. ZiLOG is responding to requests from its European Community customers for products that adhere to Wastes from Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives. These new regulations, which effectively require manufacturers to take responsibility for recycling end-of-life products, state that the use of lead and other hazardous substances must be regulated by July 1, 2006.

"Our lead free initiative aligns with ZiLOG's commitment to customer satisfaction and dedication to pursuing measures that foster a clean environment," said Mike Burger, president of ZiLOG. "Currently, it is primarily our customers in Europe and Japan that are advocating for lead-free products, but these European directives are bound to impact the global marketplace and we want to be ready for that."

ZiLOG uses 100 percent pure matte tin (Tn) plating on its lead free products. The devices are rated for peak temperatures of up to 255(degrees)C (compared to 240(degrees)C for standard products) and use mold compounds that are Br/Sb/PBB/PBDE-free. The new packages meet the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020.

The parts will be identified with a unique ZiLOG PSI part number that includes a "G" (for Green), to indicate environmentally friendly packages. The devices offer standard lead times. Customers may request a lead free version of
any currently shipping ZiLOG device by contacting any of ZiLOG's worldwide sales offices.
